If points a and b in the circuit shown in the figure are connected by a wire of resistance r, we have to show that the current in the wire is

where is the emf of the battery. Assume that and are equal . We have to show that this formula is consistent with the Wheatstone bridge condition.

It is a problem of multi-loop circuit. We have marked currents in different branches of the circuit requiring that at each junction the total current that is entering is equal to the total current that is leaving.
